About

The Joe & Dorothy Chaves Foundation

Mission

The Joe & Dorothy Chaves Foundation was founded in memory of José A. Chaves in 2010.  We advocate on behalf of immigrants seeking to improve their lives and advance the future prospects of their families in Greater Boston.  Our work is guided by our core belief that educated and empowered citizens will strengthen our democracy and enrich our culture.

Our advocacy takes shape in a number of ways:

1. Increasing educational and developmental opportunities for immigrants both in and out of school, with long-term emphasis on higher education
2. Supporting those programs that advance immigrants’ ability to achieve citizenship and educational goals in the United States of America
3. Enriching cultural life in our Portuguese-speaking communities

Active projects

The Foundation provides support to projects at Massachusetts Alliance of Portuguese Speakers (MAPS) in Cambridge, Massachusetts and also supports the Portuguese School of Cambridge and Somerville (Escola Portuguesa de Cambridge e Somerville).  We also have endowed a scholarship for students attending Bunker Hill Community College, where José Chaves taught with great passion and dedication.

Our Strategic Partners

To complement the support that we receive from our generous individual donors, we are sincerely grateful to have the support of our Strategic Partners (NAVEO Credit Union, Rogers Funeral Home) ----- these organizations are committed to our community and to the mission of the Foundation.
